Roots of the Cold War

We talked about the roots of the Cold War. Two of the first major instances were the Berlin Airlift, and the Marshall Plan.
1) Describe each; what was it, what was the goal or objective?
2) Why would the U.S. take on these two initiatives after such a costly war?
